2021 Open Enrollment, October 5 – 26, 2020

It is time to make changes, add or drop your benefits without a qualifying event. We will host Q&A sessions with our benefit vendors and benefit team members ¬to ask questions of the program carriers or assist employees with completing forms.

All Q&A sessions will be held via WebEx this year.
Please save the dates:

  • Q&A Sessions with benefit vendors:
    • October 7, 8, 9, 2020. Time 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Q&A Sessions with benefit team:
    • October 14, 2020. Time: 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
    • October 16, 2020. Time 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.
    • October 20, 2020. Time 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.
    • October 22, 2020. Time 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

Deadline is October 26. Do not wait until the last minute!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer among American women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is a great time not only to raise awareness and educate about breast cancer, but also to provide support and inspire hope to women affected by breast cancer.

The good news is that most women can fight breast cancer if it’s diagnosed and treated early in the localized stage. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Therefore, take the steps to protect your overall health and assess your breast cancer risk.

  • Monthly self-exams: be familiar with how your breasts look and feel so you can alert your healthcare professional if there are any changes or noticeable symptoms that cause discomfort, tenderness or pain in the breast or underarm region.
  • Regular clinical exam: performed by your family physician or gynecologist at your annual exam.
  • Mammograms: recommended for Women 40+ every 1 or 2 years. If women younger than 40 have risk factors for breast cancer (family history, for instance), they should ask their healthcare professional whether mammograms are advisable and how often to have them.
  • Maintain healthy habits: stay physically active, eat fruits and vegetables, do not smoke and limit alcohol consumption.

October 1 – World Vegetarian Day

Dietitians and food scientists agree, following a plant-based diet may help you live a longer, healthier life. A plant-based diet may minimize your risk of stroke, cancer and Type 2 diabetes while improving your heart health and brain function. If you’re not prepared to give up your occasional steak or carne adovada, a “flexitarian” diet may be the right fit for you. As the name suggests, a flexitarian diet allows you to be flexible by including meat from time to time, along with your fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Whether you’re an herbivore or a carnivore, check out the recipes and cooking demonstrations in the Online Cooking Class Series on the Benefits Community Insights Wellness webpage. Or, register to “Take a Healthy Break” on October 22 to see a cooking demonstration on how to prepare quick lunches for the week. After an October filled with healthy eating, you can reward yourself with a handful of Halloween candy!

October 10 – World Mental Health Day

It is anticipated that the need for mental health support will continue to substantially increase in the coming weeks and months as we navigate the challenges presented by this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. Now, more than ever, CNM employees and their household members are encouraged to take advantage of the free counseling support and other emotional well-being resources provided by our Employee Assistance Program provider, ComPsych. These resources are at your fingertips, 24/7, 365 days a year, and can be accessed on the Benefits Community Insights website.
