March is National Kidney Month

The kidney performs many crucial functions in the body. Here are some ways your kidneys keep you healthy:

  • filtering waste materials from food, medications, and toxic substances,
  • maintaining overall fluid balance in the body,
  • regulating and filtering minerals from blood; and,
  • creating hormones that help produce red blood cells, promote bone health, and regulate blood pressure.

Did you know? 1 in 9 American adults has kidney disease – an most don’t know it. You can do 5 simple things to protect your kidneys.

  • Get tested! Ask your doctor for ACR urine test or a GFR blood test annually.
  • Reduce NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) which are over the counter pain medicines. They may alleviate pain but they can harm your kidneys.
  • Cut processed foods
  • Exercise regularly
  • Control your blood pressure and diabetes.

Daylight Saving: Spring Forward

March 8, 2020

Don't forget to move your clocks ahead by 1 hour.

Daylight Saving Time forces us to move our time 1 hour ahead - this messes with our sleep because we lose an hour. How this time change affects you depends on your health, lifestyle and sleep habits. The time change will disrupt your circadian rhythm, and the brain needs some prep time to get used to a new schedule.

Here are a few tips on how to deal with Daylight Savings:

  • Ease into the time change (i.e. slowly shift your bedtime by 15 minutes).
  • Don’t overdo caffeine. The effects of caffeine can last for hours after consumption.
  • Avoid electronics before going to bed.
  • Nap if needed.
