National Blood Donor Month

Due to increased seasonal illnesses in the winter months, donations of blood and platelets decline and the demand increases. Every day, blood donors helps patients of all ages: accident & burn victims, heart surgery & organ transplant patients, and those battling cancer. Statistics show that every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.

The American Red Cross encourages everyone to give blood. Don’t wait for a disaster. You can contact the local American Red Cross or search for a blood drive in your area at the www.redcrossblood.org

You don’t need any special reason to give blood. You have your own reason to.

  • Some give blood because they were asked by a friend or family member;
  • some know family members or friends that needed blood or might need blood some day;
  • some believe it is the right thing to do; and
  • donating blood save lives!

Thyroid Awareness Month:

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the base of the neck. The thyroid gland plays a big role in the body, influencing the function of many of the body’s most important organs. It is important to talk with your doctor about thyroid wellness.

Here are some questions to ask your doctor:

  • What are the differences between hypothyroid and hyperthyroid and what are the symptoms of each?
  • What is Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), how is it measured, and what should my target number be?
  • What else besides TSH levels are important for making sure my thyroid condition is under control?
