Editing Basics

Familiarize yourself with the basic editing options and text styles.

Before you create and edit web pages, let's learn more about using Plone.

Content Types

You can create certain content types by selecting Add new... from the gray side menu.

Content Type

What They Mean

File

You can upload Word documents, PDFs, and other files and link to them from content on your pages.

Folder

Folders can contain pages and other content types that you want grouped together (this is handy to keep the navigation list organized).

Form Folder

Create online forms and add form fields to gather information from your users. Form submissions can be emailed to you, saved to a CSV file, or both.

Image

You can upload images from your computer to insert into pages.

Link

Links are used to display items in the navigation to direct visitors to pages in other areas of the website. If you need help cleaning up items in your navigation, contact us.

Page

Pages are where you will be adding and editing the majority of the content on your site. Pages can contain text, pictures, and links.

Text Editor (WYSIWYG)

When you edit a Page, you will use the rich text editor to add and style your content. The text editor has similar formatting features found in Microsoft Word and other text editing programs. What you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) when using this text editor.

Once you've saved your page, the text is displayed in the main content area.

Chunk Your Content Using Sentence Headings and Subheadings

Website visitors typically scan for information rather than reading continuous paragraphs of text. Make things easy on them by providing information in small chunks and using bullets, headers, and concise paragraphs.

Write paragraphs in a casual tone to tell your audience what you want to say, but break up your paragraphs if they get too long.

Styling Your Content

Avoid using bold and italics to emphasize your text. If your content is well written, organized, and uses other elements such as bullets or numbered lists, bold and italics are not needed.

You can insert links to connect to different parts of your website or point to an email address. Avoid using links with headers, bold, or italic text.

Listing Your Content

  • Bulleted lists
  • These are helpful for listing items
  • They are great replacements for long paragraphs
  1. Numbered lists
  2. These are helpful for listing steps
  3. They can be effective replacements for long paragraphs

Alphabetical and roman numeral lists are not available.
