“We recently started our TRIO program at the Montoya Campus in the Northeast Heights in Albuquerque and need at least 100 more students to fill slots,” said Magda Martinez, director of CNM’s program.

The Montoya Campus program opened in January and offers tutoring in math, biology, chemistry and English, for all levels taught at CNM.

“From surveys we have taken, we know there are plenty of students who qualify to participate in TRIO. As a new program, we are looking for students we can help succeed,” Martinez said.

TRIO is one of seven federally-funded United States Department of Education grant programs that serve low-income, and/or disabled, and/or first generation college-bound students. To qualify, students need to only meet one eligibility criteria, not all three. TRIO is looking for students who are determined to attend and succeed in college and will benefit from professional assistance to help them accomplish their academic and career goals.

To be eligible for TRIO Student Support Services, students must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • Must have an academic need.
  • Are working towards their first associate degree and plan to transfer to a four-year university.
  • Are income-eligible and/or first generation (neither parent nor guardian has a four-year degree) and/or have a documented disability.

Students accepted into TRIO have access to academic, career and personal coaching; financial assistance; tutoring support; college success workshops; TRIO computer lab and study area; cultural, education and community events; student leadership opportunities; networking with and support from people with similar goals and challenges.

TRIO’s goal is to help students succeed in college and achieve their dreams.
