The Count is Still ON. Participate in the 2020 Census.

Mar 26, 2020

The 2020 Census is currently underway. This is an opportunity that only comes along every ten years and it allows you to make your voices heard by local lawmakers and in Washington, DC. A complete count supports the state you live in for many years to come.

Whether you are a permanent resident, a visiting instructor, or a student from another state, if you reside in New Mexico as of April 1, 2020 (Census Day), your participation in the 2020 Census is important for the future of the place where you live.

Why is the Census so important? New Mexico needs every individual and household to take part in the Census to help ensure that our city and the state receive funding to improve our roads, schools, and public parks. The count impacts our Congressional representation in Washington. An accurate Census count makes sure federal funding is allocated for vital programs like Medicaid, CHIP, and SNAP. The Census count even informs the number of hospitals and available equipment needed in times of crises, like the one that has currently gripped our nation, Coronavirus (COVID-19).

While the 2020 Census has suspended its door-to-door visits from Census Takers, in compliance with life-saving restrictions due to COVID-19, it’s important to check your mail, find your Census form, and take the time to provide answers that will help shape the future of New Mexico for the next decade.
