“For the most part it was enlightening and very fun,” said Molly Blumhoefer, CNM’s Campus as a Living Lab and Sustainability Project Manager. “The students got to see what’s recyclable and what’s not.”

Thursday’s event started with a talk by personnel from Waste Management who explained what can and can’t be recycled and what is a contaminant. For example, don’t try to recycle a half bottle of soda because it might open and cover all the items in the recycle bin, making them useless. The same with a crumbly muffin – basically no food, coffee cups or paper towels should be put in recycling bins.

Following the Waste Management presentation, the students, working in teams, sorted through recyclables dumped on a tarp, separating contaminant materials from what was recyclable and competed to fill recycling bins. The team that filled their bin first won a reusable water bottle from Waste Management.

Next, they decorated the spokes of an umbrella with recyclables, creating a recycle tree.

Finally, there were carnival games where students threw bean bags at a can pyramid and tossed cans into bins for points. Winners were awarded reusable coffee cups and coupons for CNM’s Sun Catfés.

This week -- the second week of the eight-week RecycleMania national competition -- is the CNM Mugshot Competition. Students, faculty and staff are asked to take selfies of themselves with reusable coffee containers at CNM Sun Catfés. The best selfies will win prizes. Everyone receives discounts on coffee refills if they bring their own reusable container, as long as it is under 32 ounces.
