Strategic Direction Initiative to Expand Fast Track Programs Gaining Momentum

June 14, 2017 -- One of CNM’s Strategic Direction Goals is to expand the college’s “Fast Track” degree program model, which is inspired by the success of the initial Fast Track Business Administration Associate Degree program that was launched in 2014. The program is geared for working professionals and uses an accelerated format that allows students to complete and graduate from the program in just 15 months.

Thanks to the work of the Fast Track Strategic Initiative Team, CNM is launching the Fast Track Computer Support Specialist Associate Degree and the Fast Track Office Technology Associate Degree in the Fall Term. CNM “Fast Track” programs have been generally defined by the team as degree or certificate programs that incorporate pre-determined pathways with guaranteed course enrollment, proactive advising and mentoring, and specialized support that enable students to complete all graduation requirements in significantly less time than traditional open enrollment programs.

All three Fast Track programs are geared for working professionals. Students are part of a cohort and courses for the programs are offered in blocks that take place in the evening or online. The guaranteed course schedule allows students to complete the degree in an accelerated format.

The Fast Track Strategic Initiative Team has been meeting over the past year to assess the current Fast Track program; identify the next Fast Track programs to launch; and develop processes and procedures that will guide the implementation and evaluation of more Fast Track programs in the years ahead. The team’s charge will be completed in the fall.

“This has been a great collaborative project and we’ve received valuable input from across the college,” said Donna Diller, team member and dean of the School of Business & Information Technology. “We’re very excited to see these new programs launch because they’re going to give our students more opportunities to pursue an accelerated path to graduation. We hope that the model we developed will help others around the college create more Fast Track programs that will benefit more CNM students.”

The Fast Track Strategic Initiative Team consists of faculty and staff from: the School of Business & Information Technology; the School of Math, Science & Engineering; the School of Communication, Humanities & Social Sciences; Enrollment Services; CNM Connect; the Cashier’s Office; and the Marketing and Communications Office. The team follows the APIEI standards: Assess, Plan, Implement, Evaluate and Integrate.
