In 1995, the CNM South Valley Campus opened its doors to its first students on Isleta Blvd. near the Rio Grande. Today, the campus serves more than 1,230 students and offers a variety of programs and courses.

The South Valley Campus is housed in what was previously Pajarito Elementary School. The campus will celebrate its 15-year anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 25. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes campus tours, an open house with activities in many rooms, a reunion for Pajarito Elementary School alumni and former and current teachers and staff, complimentary refreshments, a hot rod car show and music.

The celebration will also include a ceremony recognizing those who were instrumental in the opening of the campus. Over 40 individuals, including CNM representatives, elected officials and community members, will be honored for their work in opening the campus and aiding in its success. Today the campus is bustling with activity and is home to programs such as: Veterinary Technician, Biotechnology, Cosmetology, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Clinical Lab Assistant, Phlebotomy, Nursing Assistant and Medical Lab Technician.

According to Annette Chavez y DeLaCruz, interim South Valley Campus director, a major goal of the event is to engage the community of the South Valley and bring together those who have history with the campus, especially those who attended Pajarito Elementary.

"It's an invitation to the community to come visit the campus that they have a connection to," said Chavez y DeLaCruz. "It's really about lifelong learning. Maybe (community members) will come back as students, either through Community Education or through credit offerings."

The event is open to the public and CNM community members are encouraged to attend and celebrate the history and the future of the CNM South Valley Campus. For more information, call the South Valley Campus at (505) 224-5000.
