July 2011

To better support all students at the various stages of their progression toward a degree or certificate, CNM is setting new requirements for declaring majors in programs that require successful completion of an application/petition process before officially entering the program.

CNM is now offering a new major in Pre-Health Sciences (Associate of Arts degree) that does not require an application/petition process.

All students with declared majors in the programs listed below who have not yet been accepted into one of these programs through the application/petition process are being advised to change their major to Pre-Health Sciences.

  • Biotechnology
  • Medical Laboratory Technician
  • Dental Assisting
  • Nursing and Practical Nursing
  • Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • Radiologic Technology
  • EMT-Paramedic
  • Respiratory Therapy
  • Health Information Technology
  • Veterinary Technology

Students will have the ability to change their major online soon. CNM will notify students when this online change of major process is available. New students can no longer declare the programs above as their major until they've been accepted into the program through successful completion of the application/petition process.

Any student at CNM will be eligible to declare a Pre-Health Sciences major. The Pre-Health Sciences degree also serves as a transfer pathway to health-related fields at the University of New Mexico and other four-year institutions.

Students who declare Pre-Health Sciences will receive up-to-date information about how to prepare for and apply to their desired program. The Pre-Health Sciences major has concentrations in all of the areas listed above, providing clear pathways to their ultimate program of choice.

Information sessions are being held this week with students about the new declaration of major policy and the Pre-Health Sciences option.
