Helping students connect the dots has always been a rewarding and passionate pursuit for Jennifer Cornish. It's one of the reasons she was recently hired to fill the pivotal new position of Multi-Campus Director at CNM.

Cornish, currently the associate director of Academic Advisement, will move into the new role on Sept. 20.

Among her duties will be to oversee the implementation of CNM Connect, a new model for connecting students with the resources they need to succeed. She will also be responsible for coordinating efforts among all of the campuses.

"I'm humbled by the amount of trust that people have put in me by selecting me for this position," Cornish said. "And I'm extremely excited. I'm going to get to do a lot of things that I love to do – especially making connections for people. I love to be a connector."

CNM Vice President for Student Services Phillip Bustos says that Cornish will provide great enthusiasm and a strong focus on serving the needs of students.

"Her first priority will be to establish the CNM Connect concept across all of our campuses," Bustos said. "Jennifer has an impressive history of leading teams to positive outcomes and implementing initiatives. She not only has extensive CNM experience, but she also brings external experience that will be highly valuable in helping us to optimize student-centered processes."

The general concept for CNM Connect is an expanded version of CNM's Center for Working Families. There will be a CNM Connect site at each campus that will serve as an informational hub for services that are available to students, both at CNM and in the community. Each site will be supported by an achievement coach and a small team of faculty who will be available to share their expertise. Each site will have a CNM Connect team leader under the multi-campus director's supervision.

Anytime a student is in need of guidance on how to access a service – or if they're simply wondering if there is a service at CNM that can help them overcome a challenge unique to their situation – they will know that CNM Connect is the place to go.

"We have so many resources at CNM, but sometimes they don't seem connected," Cornish said. "Sometimes a student doesn't know where to go to access certain resources and sometimes they don't even know about the resources available to them. We're going to try to create a one-stop location for them to learn about and access the resources that are available to them.

"This (CNM Connect) effort is inextricably linked to our overall efforts to stand with students as they try to fulfill their goals."

Cornish will also try to form stronger connections between the campuses, while honoring their unique identities.

"You have to recognize and support the uniqueness of each campus," Cornish said. "There are big differences between the communities that access the different campuses and each campus has its own character. I believe in that and support that.

"But we also need to create a consistency of service to the students, so to some extent, those differences can become invisible to the students. No matter which campus they attend, all the campuses need to feel like the same college."

Cornish started working at CNM in 1991. She left the college in 1999 and returned in 2004. She began at CNM as a computer lab manager in what was then called the School of Arts and Sciences. She later became a manager of desktop and network services in ITS. She also taught an Intro to Computers course at CNM before becoming an academic advisor in 2004. For the past four years, she's been the associate director of Academic Advising.
