Mount Trashmore, a creative solid waste audit program, allowed students to sort through two days’ worth of CNM waste that had ended up in trash dumpsters to see how much of the waste could have been recycled. More than 100 students sorted through the waste and determined that half of all of the trash could have been recycled. After the Mount Trashmore event, there was a 6 percent uptick in the campus-wide recycling rate.

“This was a great honor,” Luis Campos, Executive Director of the Physical Plant, said of the award. “It's a great way to kick off this year’s RecycleMania efforts, which start this week.”

RecycleMania is a nation-wide competition in which colleges across the country strive to recycle the highest percentage of waste. The 2016 edition of RecycleMania began on Tuesday. It will involve eight weeks of events, concluding on March 2 with the formerly named “Mount Trashmore” event (now titled “Mount Recyclemore” to more accurately reflect the goal of the event). Student volunteers will again sort through trash from multiple buildings on Main Campus, separating recyclables from actual waste.

In last year's nationwide RecycleMania competition, CNM finished 26th out of 232 colleges and universities. CNM recycled 54 percent of its waste during the two-month competition, an eight percent increase from the 2014 RecycleMania event. This year, CNM will try to increase the percentage again.

And perhaps compete for another Keep America Beautiful Award. Established in 1953, Keep America Beautiful consists of a national network of more than 600 community-based affiliates whose programs, initiatives and efforts, supported by millions of volunteers, help transform public spaces into beautiful places.
