Community College Day Honorees
In mid-February, eight outstanding CNM students were honored at "Community College Day" at the New Mexico Legislature in Santa Fe. Each student was the recipient of a 2011 All-USA Academic Team scholarship.

The students were accompanied by employees Sharon Gordon and Donna Trujillo. Both Gordon and Trujillo have been working with the students for many months helping them with applications for this scholarship.

Gordon held information sessions last October and met one-on-one with students to help them submit their applications.

Applications for the scholarship consisted of essays, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and short answers to questions about campus and community involvement.

According to Gordon, the students are a good representation of the diversity of CNM, coming from varied backgrounds and expressing a wide range of interests.

Upon arrival in Santa Fe for Community College Day, the students got to observe presentations and deliberations of current bills moving through the New Mexico Legislature.

They were then escorted to the House of Representatives, where students Matthew Liguori and Richard Bruggemann were invited to sit on the House floor next to Ben Lujan, House Speaker, and were introduced on the House floor.

After a lunch with Phillip Bustos, Vice President of Student Services, the students attended a formal recognition at the Capitol Rotunda where they received their scholarships.

Each recipient was awarded with a scholarship that can be applied toward a bachelor's degree at any New Mexico university, as well as an All-USA Academic Team medal to wear at their CNM Graduation Ceremony.

Lastly, the students were given a tour of the New Mexico Supreme Court Building by Chief Justice Charles Daniels.

"This was an incredible opportunity for our students to visit such a historical building," said Gordon in an e-mail. "(We saw) the Supreme Court Courtroom, we visited the dressing areas for the justices, learned a lot of the history of the NM Supreme Court and we wrapped up the tour visiting with the Chief Justice in his office. Chief Justice Charles Daniels went above and beyond to make our students feel welcome and was an incredible host!"

Gordon said that it was an incredible day and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these students.

"I am most impressed with our amazing and outstanding students," she said. "They are remarkably grateful, humble and absolutely exceptional!"
