“Tragedy + Time” centers around a former sitcom star who struggles to come to terms with his recent diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia. As the disease progresses, his children attempt to keep him grounded while facing the demons of his past. Director Angelica Ortiz, a Theatre student, explores themes of happiness, redemption and the inescapable pull of family legacy.

This production is the second to be held in CNM’s Coal Avenue Theatre in which CNM students completely produce their own work.

“Every aspect of this play, from the writing and directing to the design and stage management, is being done by CNM students and alumni,” said Theatre Department chair Leonard Madrid.

CNM’s theatrical productions provide students with valuable opportunities to put their education to work in theatrical skill sets such as design, research, performance and collaboration. CNM recently launched a Theatre associate degree program. The program introduces students to the basics of theatre, acting and production.

“Tragedy + Time” runs for two weekends beginning Friday, June 23. Friday and Saturday night performances (June 23, 24, 30 and July 1) will begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees (June 25 and July 2) will start at 2 p.m.  All performances will take place at CNM’s Coal Avenue Theatre, located on the north side of Coal Avenue between University and Buena Vista. General admission tickets are $5.
