New Programs for 2015-2016

School of Communication, Humanities & Social Sciences

Environmental Planning and Design Associate of Arts

This degree provides students a pathway toward completing the Bachelor of Arts in Environment, Planning, and Design, one of two Bachelor’s degrees offered in UNM’s School of Architecture and Planning.

Bench Jewelry Certificate of Completion

Upon completion of the certificate, students will demonstrate understanding of basic non-ferrous metallurgy. Repair jewelry mechanisms, chains, and stone settings. Students will have experience in designing and fabricating personal jewelry objects. Students will be prepared for employment in areas related to jewelry design, sales, fabrication, repair and manufacturing.

Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate of Completion

As an embedded certificate in the Human Services degree, students will be able to earn a certificate in substance abuse counseling within their degree and will be qualified to become Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (LADAC) after completing internship hours and passing the National Certified Addiction Counselor (NCAC) Level 1 exam.

Online Teaching and Learning Certificate of Achievement

This certificate will provide faculty with best practices in assessment, developing a strong online community, using current technology and communication tools effectively, locating and evaluating appropriate content online, and properly citing resources in accordance with copyright and fair use regulations and addresses the necessity to meet the needs of the broad set of learners by designing an online course that incorporates universal design techniques. This certificate will be the first of its kind in New Mexico.

School of Health, Wellness & Public Safety

Electronic Health Informatics Associate of Applied Science

This degree prepares students to work in the profession of electronic health records development, tracking, and implementation. Graduates will be able to provide support for health information management systems but will not have training in medical coding.

Exercise Science and Wellness Associate of Applied Science

This program of study is designed for students who are seeking a high-level education as a personal trainer and/or who plan to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a baccalaureate degree in Physical Education, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, and Health & Wellness. The program combines a broad foundation in the liberal arts and sciences with technical courses in the emerging and expanding field of Exercise Science.

Optical Dispensing Associate of Applied Science

This program gives the student the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to work in optical dispensing. Standard eyewear and contact lens dispensing are covered. While in progress students will be eligible to take the American Board of Opticianry (ABO) and the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) Basic certification exams (at the end of term 2) and advanced certification exams (at the end of term 4). Upon completion of the program graduates will have finished all materials to apply for master level status with the ABO.

Optical Dispensing Advanced Level Certification Certificate of Completion

This certificate provides students who already have the entry-level Basic Level Certification in Optical Dispensing the opportunity to gain the knowledge and technical skills to work as advanced-level technicians in optician's offices, eyewear manufacturing plants and retail eyewear sites.  This Certificate is term 3 and 4 of the OPTD AAS degree.

Optical Dispensing Basic Level Certification Certificate of Completion

This certificate provides students the opportunity to gain the knowledge and technical skills to work as technicians in optician's offices, eyewear manufacturing plants and retail eyewear sites. Emphasis is on both traditional eyewear and contact lens dispensing. This Certificate is term 1 and 2 of the OPTD AAS degree.

Community EMT Certificate of Achievement

This certificate is designed for EMTs with at least three years of experience to advance to the level of Community EMT. This certificate is designed to provide people who are already EMTs the ability to be employed as community EMTs.

Veterinary Receptionist Certificate of Achievement

This Certificate prepares students with entry level, reception / front office related skills to serve as receptionists or in customer care for veterinary offices, pet stores, feed or agricultural stores, or at grooming or boarding facilities.  Students will explore the basics of a variety of animal health professions, acquire skills for reception / front office service, understand veterinary professionalism, and gain skills to excel in veterinary customer service.  Veterinary medical terminology and vocabulary supporting animal care fields are included in the certificate courses.

School of Math, Science & Engineering

Computer Science Associate of Science

Students majoring in Computer Science examine the theory of computation, the design of algorithms and how to apply these principles to problem-solving.  MSE has been teaching transferrable computer science courses in Java, MATLAB, C++, and computer mathematics fundamentals for many years.  This program would provide a specific pathway for students to complete an AS degree in the subject and transfer to a four year institution.
