Student Seeks School Supplies for Needy Kids for Seventh Year in a Row

August 1, 2017 -- For the seventh year in a row, CNM student Ansely Emeanuwa, 19, is seeking school supplies to donate to kids in need at Albuquerque Public Schools. This weekend, he is calling for volunteers to set up tables outside stores that sell supplies and ask shoppers to donate to the project.

All donated supplies can be purchased “tax free” during the New Mexico Gross Receipts Tax Holiday, Aug. 4-6, and will be given to APS.

“I started collecting school supplies and giving them to APS when I was a kid in middle school,” Emeanuwa said. “Some of my friends were coming to me asking for school supplies. I didn’t ask them why, but having to see some classmates wanting school supplies so often touched my heart.”

He started thinking about how to help those children and he came up with the idea of collecting school supplies and donating them to needy kids. Initially he went door to door in his neighborhood and raised supplies. He created a list of needed items, which he shared with his neighbors and friends.

“I can tell you that it was not easy going door to door asking people to help,” Emeanuwa said. “Still, I kept my hope high and continued doing it because it's part of me. Besides my neighbors, stores like Walmart, Office Depot, Target and my church also helped.”

His goal for the first year was to raise $500 worth of school supplies. He more than reached it by raising $2,000 worth. APS was pleased, and he found himself interviewed by many media outlets.

Now, seven years later, he is continuing his project, raising more than $43,000 worth of school supplies in 2016. He hopes to do even better this year.

“Each year I try something new to get more donations,” he said. “This year I am setting up the tables outside the stores during tax free weekend. Donors will each receive a free carnation as a way to say thank you:”
