CNM Kidney Donor Jennifer Adams Organizes New Mexico’s First Kidney Walk

April 22, 2015 -- It’s been nearly a year since CNM faculty member Jennifer Adams donated a kidney to a student in her English class in the School of Adult & General Education. With that donation came a profound interest in establishing an office of the National Kidney Foundation in New Mexico.

“When I first started thinking about the donation, I turned to the National Kidney Foundation’s helpful website,” Adams said. “I learned so much about what was involved in the process.”

She also discovered that most local offices of the foundation sponsor Kidney Walks as a way to raise money to support their programs. She wanted to join a walk, but there were none in New Mexico – the closest was in Colorado,

After she recovered from the surgery, she began recruiting people to join a committee to establish a Kidney Walk in Albuquerque, which is a first step toward opening a National Kidney Foundation office in the Land of Enchantment. Five people worked faithfully on the project, including Vinnie Crispino, kidney patient and general manager of Sodexo, which operates CNM’s cafeteria.

New Mexico’s first Kidney Walk will be May 3 at Veterans Memorial Park in Albuquerque. Check-in is at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m.

“Right now, we have 100 people signed up to walk and raise $10,900,” Adams said.

“Our goal is $20,000.”

Money raised will allow New Mexico to tap into the National Kidney Foundation’s many resources, some of which include preventive health screenings, presentations on kidney health and support groups for donors and patients.

Free blood pressure checks, to be done by students in CNM's nursing program, will be offered at the May 3 event.
