Ingenuity, NMDH Hosting Peer Enhancement Education Round-up

Aug 05, 2019

CNM Ingenuity and New Mexico Department of Health are bringing together Certified Peer Support Specialists (CPSS), Community Health Workers (CHW), and Community Health Representatives (CHR) from throughout the state for PEER 2019, a one-day event that will provide education, support, networking, and potential employment opportunities for individuals working in behavioral health.
A morning session will feature a large group training on cultural humility, motivational interviewing, needs assessment, patient-centered treatment, dealing with triggers and boundaries, and Naloxone value and access.
A job fair and info sessions in the early afternoon will include representatives from as many as 50 organizations that employ CPSSes in New Mexico. Representatives from hospitals, jails, prisons, Veterans Administration, Pueblos, Medicaid Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) and many other providers will discuss employment options and opportunities with individuals who are interested in working in those fields.
Breakout training seminars following the job fair will enable participants to learn about working in settings of their choice, such as emergency departments, jails and prisons, Medicaid MCOs, treatment programs and agencies, Veterans Administration, or tribal communities. Newer CPSSes will have the opportunity to learn from peers who have a wealth of experience working in the field.
All CPSSes and CHWs will receive five CEUs during an awards celebration at the end of the day. Certified Peer Support Specialists are individuals living in recovery with mental illness and/or substance use disorder who provide support to others who can benefit from their lived experiences. There are more than 400 CPSSes in New Mexico. They are required to obtain 20 CEUs each year to maintain their certification.
This event is free of charge (including free CEUs). Breakfast and lunch will be provided. It will take place Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Workforce Training Center, 5600 Eagle Rock Ave NE, Albuquerque. A generous contribution from Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center will provide gas cards for those traveling from more than 100 miles away. For more information, or to register, please visit
