CNM Hosts State SkillsUSA Competition

Mar 15, 2017
Most of the competitions will take place on CNM's Main Campus.
There will be 70 contests in 55 CTE fields, such as automotive repair, carpentry, masonry, culinary arts, welding, videography, photography, cosmetology and architectural/technical drafting. Fifteen are leadership contests, including job interview, prepared speech, extemporaneous speaking and job skill demonstration.
On hand for the competitions will be 346 high school students and 187 post-secondary students. A total of 63 CNM students will be participating.
Gold medal winners in each event will advance to the National SkillsUSA Championships in Louisville, Ky, June 19-24. More than 16,000 people — including students, teachers and industry partners — are expected to participate in the week-long event.
In addition to rewarding students for excellence, the SkillsUSA Championships allow industry representatives to directly evaluate student performance and help keep training relevant to employers’ needs. The students also get valuable networking opportunities with employers.
Contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations and labor organizations, and test competencies are set by industry. The New Mexico contest will be run with the help of 200 industry judges.
