Sol the Suncat joined CNM President Kathie Winograd and special guests to cut the ribbon to officially commemorate the reopening of the renovated L Building. After more than a year of major renovation work, the 28-year-old building has come back to life as a cutting-edge, 21st century learning facility.

Prior to the ribbon cutting, remarks were made by President Winograd; New Mexico Cabinet Secretary for Higher Education Barbara Damron; Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry; Sydney Gunthorpe, vice president of CNM Academic Affairs; Robin Brulé, senior vice president of community relations and special assistant to the president of Nusenda Credit Union; Brianna Castillo, CNM alumna and Nusenda scholarship recipient; Chris Duerksen, CNM student; Debbi Moore, CNM Governing Board chair, and Caitlin O'Grady, CNM STEM alumna.

"It truly is amazing when we look back at all of the contributions CNM has made to this community, and the hundreds of thousands of students over the years whose lives have been transformed for the better by attending CNM," President Winograd said. "I can't wait to see what we'll achieve in the years and decades ahead as we strive to continue CNM's storied tradition of community college excellence."

Gunthorpe thanked Nusenda Credit Union for the donation of an interactive sculpture in honor of CNM's 50 anniversary. The green artistic installation, located north of the Student Resource Center, is 120 feet long, has three inset benches and is designed to encourage interaction and engagement by students and faculty.

"It is going to provide a great place for students to relax and enjoy being outdoors at CNM," Gunthorpe said, adding that CNM has been taking time throughout the year to celebrate the remarkable achievements that have occurred over the past 50 years.
