Matteucci, who passed away in the spring, served on the CNM Governing Board for 26 years, making him the longest serving Governing Board member in the college’s history. Already a successful businessman, he decided to join the Board in 1986 because he strongly believed in the College’s mission to educate and provide the skills necessary for New Mexicans to gain access to good jobs and the American Dream.

His endearing warmth, his enduring passion for the mission of CNM, his lifelong commitment to public service in his hometown of Albuquerque and his sincere care for the wellbeing of CNM students and employees made him one of the most beloved figures in the 51-year history of the College.

He played an instrumental role in helping to grow the once small vocational school, first known as Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute (TVI), into a full-fledged community college and the state’s largest institution of higher education in terms of undergraduate enrollment.

He served several terms as both Chair and Vice Chair of the Board, and was always passionate about keeping a CNM education affordable and accessible to everybody in the community.

Matteucci devoted his adult life to improving education in New Mexico through numerous leadership positions in public service. Some of the boards he served on included the New Mexico Board of Educational Finance; the New Mexico Educational Assistance Foundation; the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce; the American Association of Community College Trustees; the UNM Foundation Board; and the UNM Alumni Association.

Robert P. Matteucci Hall on Main Campus is named in his honor.
