About Disabled or Handicap Parking

CNM strongly supports the provision of designated parking spaces within reasonable distance to the College's facilities for individuals who are permanently disabled.

Blue striped areas between handicapped parking spaces are designed to give you ample room to maneuver in and out of your vehicles without obstruction, especially when using mobility assisting devices like wheel chairs or lifts.

Accessibility is provided on a priority basis with accommodation for people with a physical disability receiving top priority.

Failure to properly display a current, valid disabled parking permit may result in parking citations and/or the vehicle being towed at the owner's expense.

Illegal Use

Illegal use of a handicap placard, including unauthorized users displaying the placard, will result in the placard being confiscated by Parking Services. All confiscated handicap placards will be held in the PS building at which point said placard will be mailed to Motor Vehicle Division in Santa Fe.

Please contact the Parking Services Manager for more information on the illegal use of handicap placards and CNM's Disabled parking policy.

Definitions

A permanent disability, as certified by a physician, is a physical condition that will remain unchanged and may include, but is not limited to, the use of a wheel chair, braces, walker, crutches, or other prosthetic devices and/or involves pulmonary, cardiovascular distress, an arthritic condition, or orthopedic or neurological impairment.

A temporary disability, as certified by a physician, is a physical condition that will impede movement and mobility for a limited period of time but is subject to change.

State-Issued Disabled Placards

If you are a permanently disabled student, faculty or staff member, you may park in open lots with disabled parking spaces by displaying a state-issued disabled placard.

We also recommend you obtain a free General Permit which can assist us in locating you in the event of an emergency.

Disability spaces operate on a first come first served basis. If there are no spaces available, you may park in any general or paid parking space on any CNM campus if you are displaying your state-issued disabled placard.

Disabled Veterans

Disabled Veterans who have a specialty plate can legally park in accessible parking spaces only if their license plate displays the International Symbol of Accessibility (ISA) (wheelchair symbol) or if they have a placard.

The DV plate without the ISA is not valid to park in a handicap space unless there is also a handicap placard properly displayed. DV plates without the wheel chair symbol are treated as a regular license plate and must display a CNM permit.
