The Narcissism Epidemic

Jane Bardal, CHSS

Zuni, 12:30-1:45

We’ll discuss ideas from The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement, by Jean M. Twenge and W. Keith Campbell, with an emphasis on the impact of this topic on teaching,  learning, and students.  The self-esteem movement started with good intentions of reducing social problems, but has ended up promoting excessive self-admiration.  Narcissism is bad for student learning and performance.  This talk will focus on ways that teachers may continue to believe in the self-esteem movement, and ways that this decreases student performance.  Discussion will focus on how teachers can promote a healthy sense of self-esteem that leads to higher levels of performance
