Distance Learning (DL) or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Make Lemonade from Lemons

Overview (lemons): Blackboard may be a limiting factor for developing an effective DL environment; however, I argue that there are ways to take advantage of available tools to improve the quality of DL courses.

Objective (lemonade): Objective of the proposed presentation is to share my Blackboard-specific evidence-based teaching strategies that are easily implemented into any DL courses that use basic tools.

Examples (recipe): Specific examples include a) applying positive reinforcement using Retention Center, b) applying the testing effect using Assessments, and c) applying the generation effect using Blogs. I propose to show the setup of my DL course so participants could see how available tools can be utilized to develop or modify evidence-based teaching tools and assignments easily.

Reflections: I propose to reflect on influences of those changes on student rapport and student success. The proposal presentation will conclude with discussions of future directions.
