Instructional Technology for Sustainability Studies: The Campus as a Living Lab

Carson Bennett, CHSS; Luis Campos, Physical Plant; Lis Turkheimer, Academic Affairs

Tesuque, 10:00-11:15

“As community colleges redesign and retrofit campuses in greener ways, many forward-thinking institutions are using these projects as hands-on learning opportunities for students. These so-called ‘living laboratories’ merge academics and campus facilities management to provide students with real-world skills and, for the institution, a path to meet its sustainability goals.” –From the Sustainability Education and Economic Development (SEED) Center.

How can we at CNM leverage our campuses – including campus grounds, buildings, HVAC systems, energy use, transportation, waste management, etc. – as learning opportunities? After brief presentations from faculty, staff, and administration, we will reflect on the possibilities for utilizing the CNM campuses as living labs for sustainability studies across academic disciplines. We will also discuss building bridges across college departments (for instance: between faculty and facilities) as vital for successful “Campus as a Living Lab” initiatives.
