Session A6

8th Annual CNM Conference on Teaching and Learning

The Journey to True Diversity and Inclusion in the Classroom

Denise Ojeda (CNM/AT); Jennifer Klecker (CNM/AT

Salon B, 10:00 a.m. - 11:10 a.m.

Are we meeting the needs of our community? The growing skills gap says no. Yet, there is a huge population of people who are willing and able to work. Women comprise more than half of college populations yet those numbers are still not reflected in STEM and trades professions. The solution lies within each of us. Let’s take a journey together to discover how to create a truly equitable and inclusive classroom.

In this session, we will explore our personal biases, address best practices and solutions to helping each other recognize and keep these biases out of the classroom. We will brainstorm solutions like how to be a great mentor and the importance of role-modeling. We will accomplish all this through self-reflective practices, the Implicit Bias Test, SWOT analysis, and sharing best practices.

All participants will leave with a toolkit with ideas and a list of other like-minded CNM faculty and staff willing to work on our own diversity and inclusiveness. Our present directly impacts our future, the time for change is now.
