Santa Fe, 10:00 a.m. - 11:10 a.m.

CNM’s F.I.R.S.T. (Formerly Incarcerated Students’ Success Team) welcomes staff, faculty, and administration to learn about how the era of mass incarceration is influencing the landscape of our community college. With nearly one in thirty U.S. residents currently under active criminal justice supervision, understanding the needs and addressing the obstacles faced by students with a criminal history are keys to student and community success. Using active learning techniques, participants 1) grapple with pre-conceived notions and truths about students with a criminal justice history, 2) are challenged to contribute ideas that they can each implement to address some of the obstacles faced by this often stigmatized and isolated student population, and 3) have opportunity to suggest future directions for F.I.R.S.T. to consider. Participants leave the session armed with the knowledge of newly developed CNM resources/programming and inspired to implement strategies that can buffer the deleterious consequences of a criminal record.
