Faculty Learning Circle Kick-off: Pedagogies of Empowerment

CTL Members and additional interested faculty

Atrium, 10:00-11:15

Explore joining a Faculty Learning Circle on Pedagogies of Empowerment. Many faculty members hope to deliver more than just rich content to our students, we hope to empower students through critical thinking, incisive inquiry, and action-oriented learning.  But many of us don't really know how to accomplish this in our classes.  And it seems hard to come up with new ideas that set students on the path to greater engagement with the world.  This reading group will assemble some key readings that will inspire faculty to deepen our teaching so that we can help students make sense of the world and engage with it.  All faculty from all disciplines are welcome.  No minimum reading is required.  We will meet ONLY virtually through a bb LEARN page where anyone who is reading can contribute ideas inspired by the readings.  We will start with the book "Teaching to Transgress" by bell hooks and will move on to whatever the group decides.  The group will focus on trying to come up with concrete actions that we can take in our (f2f or virtual) classrooms that serve our students and promote engagement, empowerment, and creativity.
